While it may not be completely back to business as usual, Whakatāne Library staff have designed some crafty ways to keep patrons happy.
For those with a specific choice in mind, the 'Click and Collect' option will appeal. Library card-holders simply need to visit the website and select the books they want. A confirmation message will be sent when the order is ready to collect. Library Projects and Business Coordinator, Kim Johnston, says the service enables people to browse the selection, albeit online.
"We understand our customers miss the experience of perusing the shelves or checking out the latest titles from their favourite authors," she says. "The Click and Collect service means people can still do this, and from the comfort of their own home. All you need is a library card and PIN number."
Another innovation is the 'Bag of Books' idea, a themed selection of books hand-picked by one of the Library staff. Ms Johnston says this service is ideal for people who are keen to try something different or enjoy variety in their reading choices.
"Library customers just need to email or phone with their library card number handy and the type of book bag they’d like,” she says. “Orders will be available for collection the following day from either our Whakatāne or Murupara Libraries, and it’s entirely free of charge."
E-books and audiobooks are most certainly still available via the Whakatāne Library website, the return slots are open again and the complimentary Wi-Fi service has resumed with users able to connect their devices outside the buildings.
In line with Level 2 guidelines, strict physical distancing and contact tracing measures will be in place for those using the services. If you are unwell, please stay home and take advantage of online library services.
Ms Johnston says adapting to Level 2 conditions has its challenges, but her team is willing and able to ensure library customers don't need to sacrifice their love of reading.
"We're really looking forward to receiving orders for both our Click and Collect and Bag of Books services,” she says. “There are a few other ideas in the pipeline too, so follow us on Facebook for all the latest library news, including opening hours."
The Whakatāne and Murupara Libraries will reopen to the public from Monday, 18 May.
