Whakatāne Community Recreation Centre

Formerly known as the Whakatāne Youth Centre, the Community Recreation Centre is managed by the New Hope Community Church.

The Centre is used for a variety of youth-orientated recreational, social and cultural activities, as is the Cyber Cafe upstairs. The local youth radio station, Taiohi, transmits from the Centre.

Most of the ground floor is occupied by the Rock Pit Gymnasium and weight training club. This is a non-profit club totally funded by its members. It’s open to members seven days a week.

The Centre is centrally located in Canning Place, behind the sacred Pohaturoa rock.

Rural Halls

Future Strategy

Whakatāne District Council considers that the social and cultural benefit of rural halls is low compared to the cost of operating these facilities. Because of this, the Council intends to find and implement alternative ownership and operational models for rural halls, working together with hall committees and main users if individual communities wish to retain their halls. The Council will also liaise with the RSA, the community and interested parties in regard to any War Memorial status of halls.
