Urgent water restrictions now in place for Whakatāne & Ōhope
Whakatāne District Council has implemented water restrictions due to critically low river flows affecting the Whakatāne and Ōhope water supply. Saltwater is moving further upstream, reducing the volume of water the treatment plant can process. Without immediate conservation, further restrictions may be necessary.
Effective immediately:
• No washing down vehicles, boats, or buildings
Water Shutdown tomorrow - Tāneatua Township
Date: Wednesday 18 March
Time: 10:00 AM – 12 NOON
Properties Impacted: All Tāneatua Township
Whakatāne District Council wishes to advise you of a planned water shutdown in your area between the hours shown above. This is to enable repair works to be carried out on the 25mm pipe feed on the Tāneatua reservoir main.
Once water is back on, mains flushing will be carried out to remove any entrapped air or sediment in the line.
Water Shutdown - Parts of Whakatāne West
Date: Thursday 13 March
Time: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Properties Impacted: Mill Road, Shaw Road, Patuwai Road, Tahere Road, Jones Road, Kope Drain Road, Fortune Road, Huna Road, and Ferguson Road.
Whakatāne District Council wishes to advise you of a planned water shutdown in your area between the hours shown above. This is to enable maintenance work to be carried out on Mill Road, Whakatane.
Once water is back on, mains flushing will be carried out to remove any entrapped air or sediment in the line.
Planned water shutdown - SH30 Te Teko (19 February 2025)
We're carrying out connection works as part of our backflow prevention project, which means water will be turned off for a few hours on Wednesday, 19 February 2025.
Upcoming road closure - section of Braemar Road
What's happening?
A culvert on Braemar Road (near property #310) requires replacement.
How will this impact me?
For the safety of all road users and contractors, a temporary closure is required for a section of Braemar Road between #281 and #329.
Access to properties within the closure will be permitted, however no vehicles may pass through the actual work site at #310 Braemar Road. The closure will be manned during daytime hours to provide directions as needed.
Public notice - Whakatāne River Dredging
Whakatāne District Council will be undertaking maintenance dredging of the Whakatāne River in the vicinity of Otuawhaki Wharf.

Please avoid swimming or gathering kaimoana from the awa - from the skate park to the Whakatāne Heads - until we let you know water quality results confirm it's safe.

Water supply interruption for Whakatāne west
An emergency water supply interruption in Whakatāne west on Wednesday, 28 August, is happening to allow for the repair of a watermain under the Whakatāne Bridge.

Public Notice - Wastewater outfall pipeline testing
Whakatāne District Council advises that dye testing of the treated wastewater ocean outfall pipeline offshore from Ohuirehe Road will take place on Thursday, 1 February between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The testing will be conducted with contrast dye and drone inspection in accordance with the provisions of the Regional Natural Resources Plan (Rule DW R2).
