On average, the Council impounds approximately 1200 dogs per year. Most dogs are impounded due to owners' failure to keep their dogs contained or controlled.
To maintain public safety, we respond to many callouts concerning roaming and uncontrolled dogs. This may result in the dog being impounded.
All dogs must be registered and microchipped before they can be released from the pound.
The Whakatāne pound is open on weekdays (excluding public holidays) by appointment only. Contact us on 07 3060 500 for microchipping, viewing dogs for adoption, and collecting impounded dogs.
The Murupara pound is open by appointment only; contact the Murupara Service Centre on 0800 306 0500 to make an appointment.
All impound fees must be paid at our Whakatāne Customer Service Centre. Dog owners must then produce their receipt at the pound in order to collect the dog or have the dog implanted with a microchip.
