Barry Ave stormwater pump station upgrade

Why are we doing it?

We're replacing the old Barry Avenue Pump Station with a brand-new one.

Our new station is being built as part of an ongoing work programme to upgrade infrastructure and help mitigate future flooding. This is important as climate change will bring more heavy rain events to our rohe. The new station uses less energy than the old one and can handle more stormwater. It’s also safer than the old station, as it will be able to withstand stronger earthquakes and there will be no pond outside - instead, water will be piped directly into the pump well.

The new station will blend in with the reserve environment as 95 percent of the construction will be at or below ground level.

We expect work will be completed mid-2023, weather dependent. Please give us a call on 07 306 0500 or email info@whakatane.govt.nz if you have any questions about this work.

What's happening now?

As part of the project we’re building a temporary access ramp over Warren Cole Walkway while we install provisional stormwater pipes under the path. This will be in place from mid-April to May 2023.
