Back by popular demand, the highly anticipated Ride The Runway event returns to Whakatāne Airport on Saturday, 5 October, and this year’s event looks to more than double the number of those who took part in the inaugural ride.
Whakatāne District Council Community Safety Advisor, Richard Hamer says last year’s inaugural event was attended by 100 keen cyclists of all ages and abilities.
“Due to its huge success, this year’s event is being opened up to 250 wheeled enthusiasts."
Ride The Runway is organised by Whakatāne District Council in partnership with JNP Aviation and offers a rare and exciting opportunity for locals to experience cycling on the airport runway.
“It’s a fun-filled family event with a purpose, raising funds for Cycling Without Age – Eastern Bay of Plenty,” says Richard.
“For a small fee of $10 per person, volunteers from the group will help ensure the safety of participants and provide a well-deserved sausage sizzle after the ride, and an opportunity to look around the hangars.”
This year, tickets are required for all participants, including parents walking alongside their children on balance bikes.

Riders are asked to arrive by 11.30am for a safety briefing before the ride gets underway. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the facilities and view planes from the Whakatāne Flying School. The event will conclude by 1:30 pm.
