The Christmas period can add stress to family life, and even more so after an already stressful year. Local police and the other members of the EBoP Family Safety Network would like to offer some tips to help keep you and your whānau safe and having an enjoyable holiday.
- You know your family — what are the things that might cause stress? By identifying these things and planning ahead of them, there’s a better chance of avoiding the triggers
- Have a backup plan ready in case things don’t to plan, such as bad weather or unexpected guests
- Avoid bored children! Plan for trips to the park or beach/river
- Plan some time for yourself so you don’t get overwhelmed
- Plan a budget and stick to it
- Have plans and alternatives in place when alcohol is around; ensure food is available; keep an eye on your whānau members and guests; don’t let anyone drive drunk
If things get unsafe:
- If things start to get heated or you feel unsafe, remove yourself from the situation and have some time out
- Children who witness violence in the home can suffer severe emotional harm. Think about the children. Make home a safe place for them
- It is a good idea to have a pre-planned safety exit for you and your children. Keep your mobile charged and with you
- Have some support people — family, friends or neighbours — that you can call whenever you need them
Remember:
- You have the power to sort things out before they become a problem. Keep control. Don’t let little things turn into big problems
- Have the confidence to deal with minor issues yourself or with the help of supportive whānau members
