A sandbag median island is being installed on Hinemoa Street, at Wainui Te Whara, to test the feasibility of a permanent median island at the site.
The temporary island will be in the vicinity of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
It is intended to be used as a safe crossing point to and from the concrete shared-use path that was constructed earlier this year along the Wainui Te Whara.
The design of the median island shows that long vehicles should be able to travel through this section of road safely once the permanent island is installed.
However, the Council has decided to conduct the sandbag trial to test this, to monitor driver behavior and gather feedback - particularly from local haulage operators.
Motorists are advised to take caution driving through the area during the trial period, which is likely to go through until Christmas at least.
