The Whakatāne District Libraries will host a variety of free activities and events to celebrate Matariki this month, with something for everyone to enjoy.
Those who are keen to get up early on Sunday, 8 July can join Matua Patrick as he weaves a story set in the stars and shows you how to find the Matariki constellation. Attendees are invited to meet at the Ōtarawairere Lookout on the right-hand side of Ōtarawairere Road at 6 am, but note that parking is limited. A cup of soup and scones will be enjoyed as the day dawns.
Leading local artist Te Haunui Tuna shares his process of creating his body of work – Atua Maōri – on Monday, 9 July from 10 am to 4 pm. Places are strictly limited and intended for artists with a drawing project in progress. Contact the library on 07 306 0509 to secure a place.
On Tuesday, 10 July, Te Haunui carries on the Ta Moko journey that started at Te Kōputu last year. Te Haunui welcomes questions from anyone interested in getting a tattoo, or considering a career as a tattoo artist, during this live demonstration.
Matariki meets van Gogh on Thursday, 12 July from 10 am – 12 pm. In partnership with Marie Dixon, children aged six years and over get to create a beautiful piece of Matariki-based art. All materials will be supplied.
The Travelling Tuataras are here on Monday, 16 July from 10:30 am, with their exuburant brand of storytelling. This is suitable for the whole whānau and showcases interactive storytelling at its best, with lots of songs thrown in.
The escape rooms are back again too, at the Horizon Energy Group Whakatāne Library. On Thursday 18 and Friday 19 July, teams of 4 – 6 people, aged 13 years and over, can enter the Matariki-themed rooms. Will you be able to solve the clues and get out in 30 minutes? Places can be booked via the Library Facebook page.
Other activities include a challenge booklet (available from all District Libraries), craft activities, and the Stars of Remembrance wall, which involves decorating a star to remember a special person. A closing ceremony for the Matariki Festival and a special celebration of our loved ones will take place at 4:30 pm on Friday, 20 July at Te Kōputu.
