As part of ongoing road improvements across the Rangitāiki Plains, motorists are reminded the northern section of West Bank Road, between Thornton Road and Greig Road, will close this Monday, November 4, 2024.
Team Leader Capital Projects Dave Wathall says the six-week closure will remain in effect until mid-December to allow for road renewal works.
“Closing the northern section of West Bank Road to all except residents and businesses, will enable our crews to complete their work as safely and efficiently as possible, with the goal of re-opening the road as soon as possible.”
Dave continues, “While road closures can be inconvenient, they significantly reduce construction time and resource demands compared to stop/go traffic management, ultimately minimising disruptions for motorists.”
“The revised timeline for the current Thornton Road works, thanks to these time savings, is a great example of this in action,” explains Dave.
Works to the northern end are expected to be completed by 13 December (weather dependant). During this closure, Greig Road will no longer be available as a detour from the west, unless accessing Edgecumbe as there will be no left turn available toward Thornton. Drivers are advised to use the state highway network for detours.
“Drivers should anticipate increased traffic on the state highways and adjust their travel times accordingly,” reminds Mr Wathall. “We encourage everyone to stay informed about detour routes, plan ahead, consider carpooling, and allow extra time for their journeys.”
Meanwhile, road renewal works to a large portion of Thornton Road is progressing well, with an expected reopening date of Wednesday, 27 November 2024.
Mr Wathall notes, “This will result in a three-week overlap where both Thornton Road and West Bank Road north are closed simultaneously.”
Crews will return to the area early in the new year to begin road renewal works to the southern end of West Bank Road, between Gow Road and property number 504.
