Things are heating up ahead of the upcoming Whakatāne District Elections, with the Pre-Election Report now hot off the press.
Chief Executive Steph O’Sullivan says the report sets the scene for voters and candidates by offering a snapshot of where Council is today.
“The Pre-Election Report provides useful information to promote public discussion. It tells the story of key opportunities, issues and challenges that require strong leadership and decision-making.”
While potential candidates seeking analysis of Council’s current position should read up on the report, Steph says so too should residents wanting to make an informed vote.
“This is a really helpful piece of reading for every voter across the rohe – not just those choosing to stand,” says Steph.
“Local government is in an exciting season of change, particularly with the introduction of Māori wards this year and as we navigate the complexities of central government reform. Now is the time to ensure we have strong governance making the best decisions for the Whakatāne District and all its communities.”
Steph adds, “It’s important voters read up on Council’s past achievements and what major decisions the incoming elected members will need to make, to help them cast their vote wisely.”
The report is a requirement of the Local Government Act and is prepared by the Chief Executive independently of the currently elected Mayor and Councillors prior to an election. The pre-election report can be downloaded from www.whakatane.govt.nz/beagamechanger or is available as a hard copy from Council service centres and District Libraries.
