The land at 77 Bunyan Road is a Council-owned block that is under contract for sale. For some time people have had unrestricted access to it. However, we have seen an increase in damage to more sensitive aspects of the environment such as the coastal foredune, due to more use of vehicles, and greater numbers of people and animals. We now need to restrict access to prevent further damage.
This is a decision Council has come to over time and follows feedback from a number of parties who have a vested interest in what happens on the block and its surrounds.
Council will be installing signs this week to notify the public of the restricted access to the block and asks that members of the community respect this guidance.
Council recognises the frustration experienced by all those seeking to both protect the block and use the land for recreation and asks for patience from all people as this change is put in place.
Public access to the beach is available from Ohuirehe Road, Pacific Parade, Commodores Close and Omega Place in Coastlands.
