Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) is an annual celebration held with the aim of inspiring New Zealanders to speak the Māori language proudly. This year’s event takes place from 12th to 18th September.
Festivities are set to be extra special in 2022 as 14th September marks the 50th anniversary of the Māori Language Petition, an event that led to many of the kaupapa we have today, including Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.
Lifelong Learning staff at Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi / Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre, together with the team at Te Whare Taonga o Taketake / Whakatāne Collections and Research and in partnership with Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, have worked together to create a week-long calendar of local events, each which celebrates and honours te Reo Māori, te ao Māori and offers a uniquely Māori perspective.
The programme covers everything from a series of inspiring speakers who will deliver daily kōrero, a Māori puppet show, guided tours of our local galleries, waiata sessions, online activities, and opportunities to get creative. During the week Taketake will also exhibit taonga from the Rua Kēnana Maungapōhatu collection.
“We’re proud to champion te Reo Māori, not just next week, but in all the mahi we do now and in the future,” says Georgina Fletcher General Manager Community Experience.
“We’ve put together an exciting programme to help all our communities learn the language and reflect on its importance. We’re encouraging everyone to embrace the uniqueness of Aotearoa and the taonga that is te Reo Māori.”
“Whether you want to ako (learn), whakarongo (listen), waiata (sing), pānui (read), tuhi (write), or kōrero (speak) te Reo Māori, this is your chance to have a go and be part of the Reo Māori.
