Whakatāne District Council has implemented water restrictions due to critically low river flows affecting the Whakatāne and Ōhope water supply. Saltwater is moving further upstream, reducing the volume of water the treatment plant can process. Without immediate conservation, further restrictions may be necessary.
Effective immediately:
- No washing down vehicles, boats, or buildings
- Garden watering is restricted to a maximum of 20 minutes per day, on alternate days. Even-numbered properties on even dates, odd-numbered properties on odd dates. Hand-held hoses only, NO sprinklers.
The Council has commenced emergency upriver intake to help maintain supply, but without significant rainfall, water conservation is critical to avoid further restrictions. If water use is not reduced, further restrictions may be applied.
Residents and businesses are urged to take immediate action by reducing water use wherever possible. Simple steps include fixing leaks, flushing toilets only if necessary, taking shorter showers, reporting water wastage to the Council etc.
These restrictions will remain in place until further notice. Updates will be provided via the Whakatāne District Council website, social media, and local news outlets.
