The Whakatāne District Council has approved the concept plan for the upgrading of the Whakatāne Boat Ramp and Trailer Park.
At its meeting last week, the Council received nine submissions on the upgrade proposal, which was subject to public consultation alongside the recent Long Term Plan process.
Key aspects of the $600,000 upgrade plan include:
- Improved parking surfaces
- A boat and trailer wash-down area
- Better definition between trailer and car-only parking areas
- A restricted loading area on the wharf frontage
- Public access changes to address safety concerns
- Provision of a waka ama shelter
- Provision of a storage building for the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s boat, trailer and navigational aids
- Improved boat lift-out capability
- Landscaping improvements
After hearing the submissions, the Council agreed to review the location of the boat lift-out facility and boat wash-down area and provide access to water and waste services for Whakatāne Coastguard. Consideration will also be given to the provision of a fish-cleaning facility in the final upgrade plan. Submissions proposing the introduction of boat ramp fees were not supported.
The project work is expected to be undertaken in 2018/19, with the cost to be met from the Council’s harbour fund.
