Whakatāne District Council is celebrating a double win at the Taituarā Excellence Awards.
For the second year in a row, the Council has been recognised in the Organisation and People Development category of the Taituarā Excellence Awards for its innovative Reimagining Work programme.
This category highlights projects focusing on organisational redesign, human resource management, leadership development, or other means of building staff and organisational capability.
Whakatāne District Council Chief Executive Steph O’Sullivan says she is delighted by the announcement that recognised a culture that empowers people, provides for a modern and positive workforce environment, and ultimately enhances services to the Whakatāne community.
“I’d like to recognise our Elected Members for their continued support in investing in our people and strengthening our organisation to deliver great outcomes for our communities.”
The initiative was recognised by the judges as more than just flexible work arrangements says Raymond Horan, Taituarā Chief Advisor.
"It's a comprehensive programme that transforms systems, values, and leadership styles. Whakatāne District Council understands that building a successful local government is all about its people."
The Council's winning streak continued with Ngā Toa Mahi Tahi, winning the New Zealand leg of the Australasian Management Challenge. This competition, sponsored by Marsh, sharpens the leadership and management skills of local government staff.
The challenge organisers highlighted the team's collaborative spirit, respectful communication, and strong performance across a number of tasks. Ngā Toa Mahi Tahi will now represent New Zealand against teams from across Australia.
Tauranga City Council’s Tauranga Tuatahi came second and Auckland Council’s Tāmaki Ā Mua placed third.
Whakatāne District Council is proud to be a leader in fostering a positive and productive work environment for its staff, ultimately benefiting the entire Whakatāne community.
Seven category winners of the 2024 LGFA Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards, plus a Supreme Award, were announced at the Taituarā Excellence Awards and Gala Dinner in Wellington on 13 June. Also announced was an emerging leader of the year, four overseas manager exchanges, and the winning team of a management challenge.
