The second annual Mayoral Youth Community Awards, held last month, celebrated the achievements of 12 local young people across a range of categories. The recognition ceremony, previously known as the Young Achiever Awards, provided an opportunity for students to be acknowledged by Mayor Victor Luca for their outstanding community contributions.
Mayor Luca says the event, held in Room Tōtara (Council Chambers) in the upgraded main Council building, was a privilege to be part of.
“Young people are critically important in our community, and I believe we must recognise their achievements in as broad a range of areas as possible,” he says.
“This year we had more than 50 people attend the event, including recipients and their supporters, elected members and Whakatāne District Council staff. It was the first time we have held the awards in the refurbished building, and I received a lot of positive feedback on the new format and event. I’m looking forward to an even better event next year."
Categories included arts and culture, leadership, environment, voluntary community service and science and technology. Nominations were open to those in years nine to 14 and live in the Whakatāne District.
Billy Jean Rauhuia Knight (Ngāti Porou / Te Aitanga-A-Māhaki / Rongowhakaata), was awarded the leadership category for his dedication to the NZ Cadet Forces and demonstration of strong leadership expertise. His nomination concentrated on his natural leadership abilities and generosity in helping others gain skills in leadership.
Likewise, community service category winner, Renee Powell, was nominated for her selfless approach to others. Renee has organised local events, including ‘Adventures of Kawerau’ and ‘Mid Winter Madness’. Mayor Luca made special mention of her deep passion for creating a fun and safe space for tamariki within the Whakatāne District Community, adding that she is a true advocate for community service.
He also says the awards would not be possible without generous contributions from sponsors.
“The awards are sponsored Whakatāne Rotary and the Whakatāne-Ohope, Tāneatua and Rangitāiki Community Boards,” Mayor Luca explains. “I am immensely grateful for their generosity and pleased we are able to provide an event of this nature in our community.”
Award winners and finalists include: Arts and Culture – Ashlee McMillan-Hauwai (category winner), Raehe Ashford, Jahdge Randall-Thompson and Kael Mitchley; Environment – Jack Karetai-Barrett (category winner), Hannah Baxter and Emily Dippie; Leadership – Billy Jean Rauhuia Knight (category winner) and Jacob Hillman; Community Service – Renee Powell (category winner) and Derek Esterhuizen.
