Whakatāne District Council invited the community to join in its celebration of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori - Māori Language Week. The Council’s Pou Tikanga (Māori Cultural Advisor), Pouroto Ngāropō, guided staff on a hīkoi around significant sites in the Whakatāne CBD and an invitation to join in was extended to any interested community members. The cultural tour took in significant sites, including Wharaurangi, Pōhaturoa and Wairere.
Earlier this year, the Council resolved to work with Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi to increase the use and visibility of te reo Māori throughout Council operations and in the Whakatāne township. General Manager Strategy and Economic Development, Julie Gardyne, says Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori offers an opportunity to take some positive steps as part of a longer journey in this space. “As an organisation, we are continuing to grow our knowledge, appreciation and use of te reo Māori,” she says. “We know there is great value in embracing the kaupapa of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori.”
The hīkoi took place on Rāpare (Thursday, 13 September) and departed from the Margaret Mahy Courtyard (behind the Whakatāne District Council building). The hīkoi was followed by a kapu tī (cup of tea) in the Council foyer.
