New SH roundabout taking shape

A new roundabout taking shape at the SH2 and SH33 intersection near Paengaroa should reduce crash risks to drivers, according to NZTA. This intersection was confirmed as one of the most dangerous intersections in the Bay of Plenty earlier in 2013.

Most crashes at this intersection have been caused by drivers failing to stop and check that the intersection is clear. The Paengaroa roundabout has been designed to reduce this risk when it opens next year.

The roundabout, which lies between Tauranga and Paengaroa at the eastern end of the Tauranga Eastern Link, will have two lanes of traffic in all directions and a proposed speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour.

The new roundabout is expected to open in autumn 2014. The new Tauranga Eastern Link highway and the existing SH2 and SH33 roads will then be tied to the roundabout.

In the meantime, those passing through the region can catch a glimpse of the massive earthworks project taking place at the site.
