NZTA working to restore SH2 at Waimana

Slip blocking both lanes of State Highway 2 NZTA is continuing work to stabilise the slips caused by Cyclone Debbie and Cyclone Cook on SH2 at Waimana. The slips cover an area about 70 metres high and 70 metres wide. Access to the slip is very difficult, so a helicopter has been used this week to sluice some of the unstable material.

NZTA expects one lane to be open to heavy vehicles around the middle of next week.

Due to the unstable nature of the slip, there is still a risk more debris could come down. A geotech engineer will be onsite again today (Friday, 27 April) to assess the slips.

NZTA hopes to provide a more specific open date for all traffic later next week.
