Work has commenced on renewing parts of the raised pedestrian crossings on The Strand. There are five crossings to be renewed, with an aim toward completion of all renewals before Labour Weekend. Each crossing will take a week to complete, so there will be five weeks of works in total to complete the renewal project.
The five crossings that will be renewed are:
- Two on The Strand between Richardson Street and Boon Street
- One on Boone Street next to The Strand
- Two on The Strand between Boon Street and Commerce Street
Work has already commenced on the crossing on The Strand closest to Commerce Street.
The work project for each crossing has been designed to minimise the impact on pedestrians and traffic movement over each five-day period. There will essentially be only one day of work onsite to remove and repour the crossing's concrete, followed by four days where the crossing is covered in steel plates waiting for the concrete to harden.
Project details
Day one
- The crossing is removed in two halves, with a steel plate providing continuous one lane traffic over the crossing.
- Traffic controllers will control traffic movements in both directions.
- The concrete is then poured in place with one half being completed first, with a steel plate cover to allow traffic to travel over it straight away.
- The second half of the crossing is then poured and covered in a second steel plate.
Days two through five
- The site is left for four more days for the concrete to harden sufficiently for the plates to be removed.
- Over that four days, pedestrian access to the crossing will be closed off, but alternative crossing ramps for pedestrians and mobility equipment will be provided next to the works.
Day five
The steel ramps are removed and full pedestrian and vehicular access is restored.
