The eastern (downstream) boat ramp at the Game Wharf in Whakatāne will be closed from Monday, 29 August while essential maintenance work is undertaken. Provided there are no adverse flood events or extended periods of rain that disrupt the work programme, the ramp is expected to reopen on Thursday, 8 September.
The adjacent, upstream ramp will be available for use throughout closure period, but the Whakatāne District Council advises that boaties may experience some delays while launching or retrieving their boats during busy periods.
Harbour Development Project Manager Jim Finlay says the work will involve the removal of cracked and broken concrete slabs and the laying of new, reinforced concrete sections. “Work progress is dependent on weather and river conditions, and we’ll keep the boating community informed about the ramp reopening schedule.”
He says the resurfacing will eliminate a growing trip hazard for people using the ramp. “Given that the whitebait season is underway, a temporary dam structure will be put in place to ensure that no dust, debris or fresh concrete can wash into the river. We’ll also be using a quick-set additive in the concrete so that it hardens as quickly as possible.”
