Whakatāne District Recovery Project Update - Monday, 15 May

EQC work

The removal of silt from EQC cleanup operations continues. On Monday, work begins on subfloor cleanout work. A number of heavily-impacted properties have also been identified for EnviroNZ Bobcat work.

Security

The Recovery community team are meeting with Police on Tuesday to understand the current situation and discuss the way forward regarding the security in Edgecumbe area. There are three full-time security guards in place at the moment.

Business news

A business confidence survey to collect information about businesses in all affected areas was launched last week and will run until 17 May. The information obtained will used in the MBIE business support package process. In addition, a multi-texting service has been set up to enhance communication with businesses.

Applications for the MBIE business support package will remain open for six months and are available to all impacted business in the District. It is expected to start providing grants this week, based on the criteria defined by MBIE.

Work is well underway to dry out the Edgecumbe Mall – although this was hampered somewhat by the rain event over Friday-Saturday last week.

Safety for pedestrians and children

Communication and resources are going to children in Edgecumbe early next week with safety information and highlighting the need to take extra care around the contractors while going to and from school. Contractors are also receiving information highlighting that extra care is needed.
