Public notice of right to demand a poll on electoral systems
Notice is given under section 28(1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001 that electors of the Whakatāne District Council have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the next two triennial general elections (2016 and 2019) of the Whakatāne District Council.
The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Voting (STV) electoral systems. Unless a poll determines otherwise, the FPP electoral system will continue to be used for the Whakatāne District Council.
Public notice of right to demand a poll on separate Māori representation
The Council has resolved not to create separate Māori representation on the Council for the next two triennial general elections (2016 and 2019) of the Whakatāne District Council. Notice is given that the Whakatāne District Council electors have the right to demand a poll on the introduction of separate Māori representation.
Each of these two issues requires a separate poll. A valid demand for a poll must be:
- Made in writing
- Signed by at least 5% (1,118) of eligible electors of the Whakatāne District Council
- Delivered to the Whakatāne District Council office, Commerce Street, Whakatāne by 5 pm on Monday, 2 March 2015
Every elector who signs a demand must also set out his or her full name and the address for which they are qualified as an elector of the Whakatāne District Council.
