The Whakatāne District Council has had a Climate Change project underway since 2017. In 2017, we signed the New Zealand Local Government Leaders' Climate Change Declaration. This committed us to put into place ambitious action plans to reduce GHG emissions and to build the ability of our organisation and the community to recover quickly from difficulties.
In 2019 we adopted a set of Climate Principles and in 2020 we adopted our first Climate Change Strategy and Action Plans. Note this strategy and action plans have been superseded with Council adopting Our Climate Pathway as Council's response to the climate challenge on 27 June 2024.
