Most wastewater blockages are caused by people flushing things down the toilet or sink that they shouldn't, like fats, oils and wet wipes.
You can help to protect our wastewater network and the environment by following our practical tips to prevent blockages in your plumbing and in public pipes.
What if I have a blockage or overflow on my property?
Council sewerage reticulation maintenance staff are available 24 hours a day to attend to drainage faults in the wastewater reticulation network.
Drainage faults, blockages and sewage overflows on private property are generally the responsibility of the property owner.
Where the source of the fault is not clear, the property owner should contact a drainlayer/plumber to have a look and determine whether the fault is located on private property (usually 0.5m inside the property boundary) or in Council’s wastewater network.
If it's determined the fault lies within Council's wastewater network, the drainlayer/plumber needs to contact the Council and report to our Customer Services on (07) 306 0500.
Council also maintains a Property File for each property. Most files contain a drawing of the wastewater drainage arrangements which can be accessed here.
