Keep New Zealand Beautiful Mural

You beauty Whakatāne!

Whakatāne is proud to be the recipient of the Supreme Towns & Cities Award from the national Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards. Read the media release.

Whakatāne will receive, as part of the Resene awards sponsorship, a mural painted in our town - and we're looking for an artist to make this happen!

About the awards

Run annually since 1972, the awards, which celebrate sustainability and environmental excellence, inspire, recognise and acknowledge those individuals, schools, community groups, towns and cities working passionately to Keep New Zealand Beautiful.

The Supreme Towns & Cities Award winner is chosen from across all the Towns & Cities applicants and is the judge’s top pick from the set of finalists. The Whakatāne entry was deemed an “absolute stand out above all other applicants.”

Calling all artists

To acknowledge Whakatāne winning the Supreme award, Whakatāne District Council has been provided the opportunity to commission an artist to paint a mural in the town.

With the support of Keep New Zealand Beautiful and Resene, Council is now calling for proposals from creative groups, collectives or individuals interested in designing and painting the mural.

The area that has been chosen is a blank wall alongside Te Kōputu a te Whanga a Toi / Whakatāne Libraries and Galleries located along the Esplanade Walkway in the Whakatāne CBD. The areal is eleven metres wide by four metres high. Please see the below image for the mural site and measurements.

Design entries have now closed.
