Event marks completion of SH2 Taneatua realignment project

The NZ Transport Agency says an event held this morning at Taneatua marked the completion of the State Highway 2 realignment project.
Attending the completion of works morning tea were Whakatāne District Council Mayor Tony Bonne, Tāneatua Ward Councillor Andrew Iles and local iwi elders from Tuhoe, says the Transport Agency.
Severe weather watch in effect for expected heavy rain
MetService has issued a severe weather watch for the Bay of Plenty due to expected bursts of heavy rain this weekend.
"A moist north to northwest flow is expected to spread over New Zealand today (Thursday), with a series of embedded troughs moving across the country during the next few days, bringing bursts of heavy rain to many places," MetService reports.

Finish line in sight for Taneatua SH2 safety project

Motorists on State Highway 2 (SH2) near Taneatua will have a safer road to travel on as soon as July, with the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) confirming the new, realigned road will be completed that month.
The realignment project will provide a straighter, wider and safer road by removing the Taneatua Rail Overbridge, upgrading the existing detour around the over bridge (which has been in use since the over bridge closed in 2011) and widening the SH2/Taneatua Road intersection to improve sight distances at the intersection.
