Climate Change

The climate is changing. It's incredibly complex and at times overwhelming. It's already affecting our weather, health and wellbeing, natural environment, taonga species, mahinga kai, food production, biosecurity, infrastructure, and the economy.

We can't solve it with just one solution, but lots of small actions make a difference.

Responding to the impacts of climate change on our District and doing our bit to reduce future climate change is the responsibility of each of us, individually and collectively. Responsibility for enhancing our community resilience and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions does not sit with one group, person or organisation. However, the Whakatāne District Council acknowledges its role in leading the community on this journey and has committed to ongoing climate action and leadership.

Climate change is a key strategic issue for the District. The Council has worked with the community to develop a collaborative, community-led climate change strategy for the District, ‘Our Climate Pathway’ and action plan.

Regular updates on the Climate Change Project are included on the public agenda for Projects and Services meetings, which usually occur every seven weeks.

These reports summarise the progress made towards the targets, goals and actions outlined in our climate change strategy and six action plans.

We've put together some handy resources for you to learn more about climate change and its likely impacts on our region.
