We offer conventional casket burials at all of our cemeteries. Our Hillcrest Cemetery also has specific areas set aside for children, babies and natural burials.
Arrangements for burial must be made at least eight working hours in advance. All plots are dug to double depth. Up to two burials and three sets of ashes can be buried within a plot, with the permission of the person or family who own the plot.
Council-operated cemeteries are open for burials between 10 am and 5 pm, Monday to Saturday, including most public holidays. The last burial booking time is 3:30 pm. Please note that burials on Saturdays and public holidays will incur additional charges.
Maintenance
Council maintenance
Our staff maintain the grounds and gardens at all Council-owned cemeteries. As part of our grave care programme, our Sexton may begin re-levelling the grave from 14 days after a burial, however we generally allow a little more time. We regularly monitor our cemeteries to identify sites that may need filling with top soil due to subsidence. This is a normal process and can happen to both new and old graves, especially after heavy rain.
This ongoing maintenance is included in the burial fee, there are no additional charges for this service.
Plot owner maintenance
Burial plot owners and families are responsible for maintaining and caring for their headstones and reporting any vandalism to Council. All headstones and plaques are the property and responsibility of the family.
Unassisted Burials
You may optionally choose to arrange a burial without a funeral director. Guidelines and necessary forms for this process are below.
