Pre-purchased plots often remain unused for decades, taking up valuable space in our cemeteries and making them 'full' before they have reached capacity.
Burial and ashes plots
Pre-purchasing of plots is not permitted.
Plots can only be purchased when organising a burial at which time the family have the option to purchase two plots; one for the deceased and the neighbouring plot for future use.
Plot purchase requests can be made directly with the Cemeteries Administrator or through a funeral director.
Plot renewal and selling back unused plots
The right of burial is valid for 15 years from the date of acquisition. If no interment occurs within this time, Council will attempt to contact the purchaser or next of kin to confirm if the plot is still required. If the rightful owner wishes to relinquish their rights to the plot and sell it back to Council, they may be refunded up to 50% of the current prescribed fee for similar plots.
