The Great Coast Clean-up needs you
Waste-Zero-Whakatāne is teaming up with KG Kayaks and the Department of Conservation to bring The Great Coast Clean-Up to our region on Saturday, 10 November. The purpose of the event is to remove as much plastic, rubbish and waste as possible from our coastal environment, from Matatā in the Whakatāne District to Ōpape in the Ōpōtiki District.
Aquatic Centre Open Day coming up
If you're keen to find out more about what the Whakatāne Aquatic and Fitness Centre has to offer, then head along to the Open Day on Saturday, 3 November from 9 am until 2 pm. Whakatāne District Council is partnering with Sport Bay of Plenty to help the community see what’s available at the Aquatic Centre.
Museum tours available
Tours of the new Whakatāne Museum and Research Centre - Te Whare Taonga ō Taketake - will be available to interested community members on weekdays from Monday 12 November until Friday 23 November, ahead of the facility’s opening for research and community engagement activities.

Murupara Aquatic Centre season opening
The Murupara Aquatic Centre will open its 2018/19 season with a day of family fun on Saturday, 20 October. Saturday's opening will be highlighted by heaps of games, a free sausage sizzle and the availability of the pool’s giant inflatable from 11 am till 3 pm.
Awakaponga Hall insurance policy to be transferred
The Whakatāne District Council’s Projects and Services Committee has recommended that the Council fund the insurance excess for damage to the Awakaponga Hall caused by the April 2017 storm events, and then transfer the policy to the hall owner.

Whakatāne - Where kiwi wander! Bronze kiwi sculptures on display at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi Whakatāne Library & Exhibition Centre
Ten life-sized life-like bronze kiwi sculptures will be on display at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi Whakatāne Library & Exhibition Centre from 6th - 31st October. The exhibit will be Whakatāne's first chance to see the new sculptures which will form a scavenger hunt and education arts trail through the town.

Dog owners urged to be considerate
The Whakatāne District Council is urging residents using the new Ōhiwa Harbourside Trail to be considerate when exercising their dogs. Council has received a number of complaints regarding an increase in the amount of dog mess left on and around the trail, largely due to dogs that are not on leads, and owners who are not living up to their responsibilities.
ShakeOut 2018
At 09:30am on 18 October 2018, New Zealand will be taking part in ShakeOut, an international earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi (walk). It's important that you, your family and friends know what to do in the event of an earthquake or tsunami so this is the perfect opportunity to prepare.
Council Chief Executive appointment announced
Whakatāne District Mayor Tony Bonne has announced that Stephanie O’Sullivan has been appointed Chief Executive of the Whakatāne District Council. Ms O'Sullivan will take up her new role on 19 November.

The Whakatāne District Council’s website has been ranked as the best local government site in the country, for the fourth year in a row.
