The Whakatāne Community Safety Group, consisting of the Whakatāne and Murupara Police and the Whakatāne District Council, has reviewed the District’s CCTV Policy (Whakatāne District Electronic Surveillance (CCTV) Policy).
Draft CCTV Policy - (PDF, 850 KB)
The focus of the review has been to improve two key elements of the Policy:
- Enable greater use of CCTV cameras in locations that are identified as providing better crime deterrent or identification. The draft Policy proposes to remove the current restriction that allows cameras to be installed only in the locations where high crime rates exist. This would enable more strategic placement of cameras, for example at entry and exit points of towns.
- Enable the use of cameras for the ongoing monitoring and management of assets and facilities. The draft Policy provides the Council with the option to install cameras in public places to monitor assets and facilities to enhance public safety deter vandalism and monitor use of assets and facilities.
Some other minor amendments have been made to the Policy to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation and to reflect the current operation of both the Council and the Police.
