To meet the demand for berths in the Whakatāne River, the Whakatāne District Council intends to construct a 160-metre long pontoon wharf along the river-edge adjacent to Quay Street, Whakatāne. The proposed facility will extend 160 metres eastwards from the Visitor Information Centre (Otuawhaki) across the Wairere Stream mouth, ending 10 metres before the Te Toka o Taio reef.

Construction of the planned pontoon wharf structure would be undertaken in two stages, with the first stage extending 100 metres from Otuawhaki towards the Wairere Stream and Stage 2 extending 60 metres from the Wairere Stream eastwards.

Consultation is an important aspect of this project, and the Council is endeavouring to provide stakeholders and other interested parties with opportunities to provide suggestions or express concerns before the design of the proposed wharf is finalised.

A public display of the pontoon wharf proposed for Quay Street in Whakatāne will be held at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi - the Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre - between 22 September and 3 October 2014.
