Apanui Canal works begin this week

Excavation and reshaping work will begin this week along the section of stormwater channel between Pyne St and The Strand. The work involves Waiotahi contractors excavating the channel base and sides, and a general reshaping within the drainage reserve.

The reshaping will improve the movement and storage of stormwater within the reserve, as well making the area more manageable for mowing and vegetation control activities. The material removed will be placed within the reserve confines, but at elevations above the normal flood levels.

Once this initial section is complete, works will proceed downstream towards the pump station, finishing at the footbridge across to the skate park. The first section is expected to take about four days to complete.
