Archaeology – wāhi tapu and kōiwi

The recent flooding has resulted in many changes to the land. All repair and maintenance work and shifting of earth may uncover or come across archaeology. If you come across any item that you think may be an archaeological item, or the site of repair work is a known wāhi tapu, please report this by getting in contact with your local Iwi or the Whakatāne District Recovery Project (iwi liaison Arapeta Taitoko) or Rachel Darmody, Heritage NZ Regional Archaeologist, before any work continues in the area.

You can contact Arapeta Taitoko on 0800 306 0500.
