Beware aggressive magpies

The onset of magpie breeding season could see the re-emergence of aggressive behaviour to protect the birds’ nests from ‘intruders’.

In this case, the intruders are likely to be any pedestrians or cyclists who happen to be in the vicinity of the main nesting areas – usually around the southern (Landing Road/Eivers Road) section of Warren Park and on the Warren Cole Walkway, close to the end of McGarvey Road.

During the six-week breeding period, nesting magpies are likely to swoop on passersby to drive them away from their nests. The Whakatāne District Council recommends that anyone who experiences such ‘dive-bombing’ behaviour moves quickly, without running, away from the area. Bike riders should dismount and walk. An aggressive reaction is not recommended, as this may intensify the birds’ defensive activity.

The Council will monitor community feedback on the birds’ behaviour, and if there appears to be a significant issue, we will arrange for a trapping operation to be undertaken.
