Council to consider Combined Waters Bylaw

A comprehensive review of the Whakatāne District Council’s bylaws will begin at the end of May with a formal public consultation process on a draft Combined Waters Bylaw.

The proposed Combined Waters Bylaw and related draft consultation documents were received by the Council’s Policy Committee earlier this month and referred to the full Council meeting on 25 May for adoption.

The combined bylaw incorporates current bylaws covering trade waste, wastewater and water supplies, plus a new stormwater bylaw. Its intent is to simplify and refine the existing bylaws, which were developed 10 years ago, to create a more user-friendly and effective approach to managing the Council’s inter-related water systems. The addition of a stormwater bylaw is also required to allow the Council to manage the environmental impacts of stormwater, ensure that there is a clear distinction between stormwater and wastewater, and protect public health and safety.

Once adopted, the draft bylaw and consultation documents will be made available via the Council website and at Council offices and District Libraries. Targeted consultation will also be undertaken with iwi and other identified stakeholders. The formal consultation period will run from Monday, 29 May to Friday, 30 June. The Council will then hear any submissions and consider any amendments required before the final Combined Water Bylaw is adopted.
