Enthusiasts invited to Green Fingers Expo

Whakatāne District Council is inviting volunteers with a passion for beautiful green spaces to attend its Green Fingers Volunteer Expo on Friday, 8 April from 10 am – 1 pm at the Whakatāne Rose Gardens.

Whakatāne District Council Places and Open Spaces Planner Jane Wright says the Expo will be a great opportunity for like-minded people to get together and learn about the excellent work being done by volunteers in our District and find out how they can be a part of that.

“We’re looking for enthusiastic people who want to help us improve the quality of our public green spaces in the Whakatāne District,” Ms Wright says. “It’s amazing what can be achieved through some focused efforts and a bit of applied knowledge.”

Ms Wright says the Expo will be an opportunity to build on the great work already being done around the District. “Participants will hear from some of our wonderful volunteers about their involvements in groups such as Whakatāne Harbour Care, the Whakatāne Kiwi Trust, and the Sullivan Lake, Apanui Saltmarsh, and Waiewe Reserve care groups.

“We’re especially keen to talk to people with special interests in roses, perennial flower gardens, camellias and rhododendrons,” she says. “We also have some great projects which would benefit from people who have an interest in orchards and vegetable gardens, or scenic trails such as the Ngā Tapuwae o Toi walkway.”

People of all ages and capabilities are welcome to attend the expo – you don’t have to be skilled to be involved, as participants will be supported by Council staff and others with specialist knowledge. Refreshments will be provided. In the event of rain, a postponement notice will be broadcast on 1XX (90.5FM, 92.9FM) at 9 am and posted on this website and our Facebook page.
