G. C. Caisley photographic exhibition at Te Kōputu

The Whakatāne Museum and Research Centre is developing an exhibition and publication featuring the photographic work of Christopher George Caisley (b. 1882 – d.1960). The exhibition will be on display at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi - the Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre from 18 July–31 August.

Working out of a stationer’s store on the eastern Strand as both proprietor and photographer, Caisley captured images of the people and places of early 1900s Whakatāne. His images have helped shape the way we view our District and our past, and the museum has a large collection of photographs taken by Caisley.

An exhibition featuring this collection will run from 18 July to 31 August 2014, and museum staff are appealing to the public for any information they may have on the photographer and his work. Museum and Arts Assistant Fleur MacRae encourages anyone who feels they may be able to assist with information about the photographer or who could help identify portrait images to contact the museum.
