Whakatāne’s first Glo Rush may have been postponed thanks to weather on Friday, 14 October, but the Whakatāne District Youth Council is determined it will make its debut next Friday, 28 October.
The event, which sees participants run or walk a 4 km course along the Warren Cole Walkway with glow-in-the-dark clothing and accessories, was called off due to a severe weather warning. Loreen Hartley, Community Development Advisor at Whakatāne District Council, says that while this was regrettable, it was also unavoidable. “Because it is a night event, we have generators present and other electrical equipment, and we couldn’t risk staging the event in the rain when there are young members of the public present. The Youth Council have put a great deal of work into this, so we are hoping the weather cooperates this time.”
The event starts from the Whakatāne Rose Gardens at 7:45 pm and follows the Warren Cole Walkway towards the Bridge before returning to the Rose Gardens. There will be food trucks present, Q97 will be broadcasting, and there are a host of great spot prizes, including a scenic DC3 flight with Air Chathams and a trip with White Island Tours, amongst others. The registration desks open at 6 pm, where packs can be collected.
The event is $10 for those 6-12 years of age, $20 for those over 12, free for under 6s, and each entrant gets a tshirt and glow acessories. Anyone interested in taking part can register/pay at the Council Civic Centre up until Wednesday, 26 October. Limited registrations will be taken at 6 pm on the event day.
