Hot mix asphalt resurfacing scheduled for Whakatāne and Ōhope

Works on the Strand which were originally scheduled for early May will now take place between 6 pm - 2 am Monday, 16 May to the morning of Friday, 20 May. If inclement weather affects the works, additional works will take place Sunday, 22 May.


Whakatāne District Council contractors will be carrying out hot mix asphalt road resurfacing at various locations in Whakatāne and Ōhope through to mid-May.

The resurfacing programme commences with Pounama Place resurfacing between 8 am and 5 pm on Friday, 22 April. Francis Street hot mix asphalt resurfacing is scheduled to be carried out on Tuesday, 26 April from 8 am to 5 pm.

King Street, between Domain Road and James Street, will be resurfaced over three nights to avoid traffic delays. The process will begin with surface preparation on Monday, 9 May, followed by patching on the second night, and resurfacing on the third night. These works will be carried out between the hours of 7 pm and 3 am.

Similarly, The Strand (from Wharaurangi to the intersection with Kakahoroa Drive) will be resurfaced over six nights with preparation and patching taking place from Tuesday, 3 May and hot mix asphalt surfacing taking place over three nights between 6 and 10 May. These works will also be carried out between the hours of 7 pm and 3 am.  

Finally, the Pohutukawa Avenue/Ōhope Road intersection will be resurfaced over three days, from 11 to 13 May, between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm.

Traffic control will be in place, and motorists may experience delays. The Whakatāne District Council apologises for any inconvenience experienced.
