July School Holidays at Te Kōputu

Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi is delighted to have Pacific Curls with us on Wednesday, 24th July. They will be presenting an exciting and interactive experience for children aged 5–12 years old. Several performances are planned to take place throughout the day, each lasting for about 30 minutes. The sessions are filled with music, dance and stories.

Pacific Curls is an exciting Pacific women’s duo who have toured Europe, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, New Caledonia, USA and New Zealand. Pacific Curls teach a range of instruments from taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instruments) such as nguru, kōauau and pūtōrino and ukulele, percussion, guitar and vocals, as well as traditional dance and song.

Our celebration of Te Reo Māori carries on through the holiday. There are activity sheets to complete or colour in. In the children’s reading area, a computer will be available for Tamariki to create their very own Pukapuka Reo Māori. The pukapuka can either be printed or saved to a memory stick, so remember to bring a flash drive/memory stick with you.

Story Scramble – fun story reading sessions for pre-schoolers. Friday 19 and 26 July from 10:30–11:00.

Hairy Maclary and his friends are celebrating their 30th birthday in July. We have fun activity sheets for children to take home. For any enquiries please phone Te Kōputu Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre, (07) 306 0509.

The Museum and Arts team is offering a unique opportunity for children and adults to experience what it takes to ‘Pack-like-a-Pro’. Bring your own precious object and learn how to correctly pack it to museum standards. The cost is $5 per person. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult, as these workshops involve the use of a sharp blade.

Places are limited so get in quick and book your place by emailing: lec@whakatane.govt.nz

Dates are:

  • 18 and 25 July  10:30–11:30 am for the children’s workshop
  • 21 July 10:30–11:30 am for the adults

These workshops support the ‘Lifting the Lid’ exhibition currently on show in the Opus Gallery.
