The upgraded Ōtarawairere Bay-West End section of the Ngā Tapuwae o Toi Walkway is now open to recreational users.
Significant improvements to the stairway sections leading up from the bay to the headland promontory were completed by contractors late last week. Notable outcomes include a better walking surface, well-graded climbs, and safe handrails, with the feedback from early users being particularly positive.
Whakatāne District Council Places and Open Spaces staff are looking forward to further, progressive improvements to one of the area’s key recreational attractions, with the upgrading of a one-kilometre section of the track (between the north-western end of Ōtarawairere Bay and Kōhī Point) expected to be completed before Christmas.
