Safe Boating focus at Aquatic Centre

Getting out on the water is one of our District’s great attractions, and the Whakatāne Aquatic Centre wants to make sure you get safely back on dry land.

To raise awareness of safe boating in the Eastern Bay, the Centre is running a programme in cooperation with Coastguard Boating Education and the Whakatāne Community Board urging our community to practice safe boating skills. “We are surrounded by water,” says Aquatics and Fitness Programme Co-ordinator Nicola Olding, “and so many of us use boats that we are targeting safe boating skills. We want it to be automatic for children to put life jackets on, just like putting on a seat belt in a car, so we will also be integrating the Safe Boating programme into our Learn To Swim programme. All participants will receive a Coastguard Boating Education, Safe Boating certificate, and you can visit our website to find out more and see a video on what the programme is all about.”
