Save the date for annual over-80s morning tea

People enjoying the morning tea.Whakatāne District residents over the age of 80 are encouraged to circle Tuesday 3 December in their calendar for the annual celebratory morning tea. The occasion, hosted jointly by Whakatāne District Council and Community Boards, is an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution the older generation has made to our communities.

This year's morning tea will be held at the Whakatāne War Memorial Hall on Tuesday 3 December, starting at 10 am. Guests can look forward to being served hot beverages and delicious food by Mayor Judy Turner, Councillors and Community Board representatives while enjoying entertainment provided by talented children from the Sound of Music cast.

Mayor Turner says the event, which will mark its 20th anniversary next year, is now much-anticipated by members of the community. "It is an absolute pleasure to host the over-80s morning tea, especially at this time of the year when people can feel slightly lonely as we head into the busy festive season," she says. "This wonderful event brings people from all walks of life together to celebrate the year that has been, and also enables elected members to give back to those who have given so much."

Members of the Floral Arts Society will again lend their artistic flair to style the venue, which is always a highlight for the keen gardeners amongst the guest list. RSVPs are not required, and partners and caregivers of 80-years-plus residents are also welcome to attend.

"I encourage anyone in the over-80 age group to join us for this occasion," says Mayor Turner. "As the new Mayor, I'm very much looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up over a cuppa."
