Take a free pahi (bus) tour of Whakatāne's significant sites

Māori Language Week may have been and gone, but the opportunity to explore our local history and culture continues.

Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi – the Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre – is providing a unique opportunity for the people of the Whakatāne District to explore some of the town’s cultural and historical landmarks through its free Whakatāne Pahi (Bus) Tour 2013.

Whakatāne District Council Library Services Coordinator, Tangimeriana Rua, says the tour is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to promote Te Reo Māori. “This tour provides an opportunity to highlight the wonderful heritage sites we have right here in our own backyard,” she says. “It will also explain the significance of the various sites as well as the origin of their names.”

Ms Rua adds, “We’re privileged to have a guide on board from local operator, NativConnectioNZ, who will talk us through the sites, their significance and their history.”

The pahi (bus) departs at 10;30 am from Te Kōputu on Wednesday, 10 July 2013, and will return there around 12:00 pm. Bookings are essential, as places are limited. Anyone interested in taking the tour should contact staff at Te Kōputu on 07 306 0509 to secure their place.
