Wet weather expected - drive carefully

Wet weather is expected on 20 and 21 January, which could make for slippery conditions on local roads. NZTA urges motorists travelling in the Bay of Plenty to take care during the rainy period.

NZTA notes that road surfaces can be very slippery after a long dry spell, when dust, dirt, oil and other debris builds up on road surfaces. Rain causes these to flow over the road, making driving conditions slippery and dangerous. Conditions are worst in the first few hours of rain, and light rain can be more hazardous than a heavy downpour.

NZTA recommends reducing speed below the legal limit, increasing following distances, and taking it easy on corners. They also advise drivers to check the latest highway conditions before setting out.

More information on delays, closures and detours is available at NZTA.
