Parade to honour medallist

A parade to honour local Olympic gold medal heroine Lisa Carrington will be held through the Whakatāne CBD on Monday, 19 September.

The parade will begin at the Whakatāne Visitor Centre at midday and progress down The Strand and Richardson Street to finish at the Margaret Mahy Courtyard, on the western side of the Civic Centre.

Members of the Whakatāne Kayak Club and Surf Life Saving Club will be involved in the parade, which will be welcomed with a pohiri and civic ceremony at Margaret Mahy Courtyard. The event is also supported by Radio 1XX and Sun FM, with both media organisations taking part in the parade.

Ms Carrington will speak to her supporters, but due to time limitations, she will not be able to sign autographs or pose for individual photographs.

Anyone wishing to welcome Lisa Carrington home and celebrate her repeat gold medal success should line The Strand from 11:45 am. The parade will start at noon and conclude by 12:20 pm. The public are also invited to attend the Civic Centre ceremony, which is expected to conclude by 1 pm.
