New funding for camping infrastructure

The Whakatāne District is to receive Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment funding to improve infrastructure at several of its public campgrounds. The funding covers 14 locations throughout New Zealand, with Whakatāne receiving $110,750 for work to enhance four designated areas for overnight camping to accommodate self-contained vehicles.

The enhanced facilities will help Whakatāne become 'camping friendly' by helping to meet visitor expectations through the provision of quality overnight camper facilities. The enhancements will also minimise impacts on residents and other users sharing the designated public areas.

Mike Naude, Manager Places and Open Spaces at Whakatāne District Council, says the funding means Council can give several of its campsites much-needed upgrades. “Works will include improving access to sites, installation of two greywater disposal tanks, upgrading signage, installing fencing, and upgrading public conveniences. This is a very positive step to improving facilities within our District.”

A schedule of works has yet to be announced, but Mr Naude says that they will be completed prior to July 2017.
